So it’s the middle of winter. The holidays are over. You’re back to working full days. It’s too cold to go for a run. All that us east coasters have to look forward to for the next month is snow and Vanlentine’s day…and for most of us, that sucks. So here are 5 simple songs to get you through…whatever it is you’re going through. Sleep on it, wake up, and blare these.
Jhene Aiko “Eternal Sunshine”
It’s in Aiko’s repeating lines “Only the good things. All of the good things.” That you feel a bit safe. Underneath, a soft beat, the nostalgia noise of the record player, and a beautiful yet simple piano melody. This song is a re-charge !
Pearl Jam “The Fixer”
Eddie Vedder literally wants to help. And he’ll fight to do it. It’s good to have someone by yer side. So whenever you’re pissed, stuck, or even feeling like the caretaker yerself just sing those good vibed lines “when something’s lost, I want to fight to get it back again ! ”
Alanis Morissette “Hand In My Pocket”
Despite everything, Alanis is chill and working through the bullshit. And an entire generation says: “I care but I’m restless…I haven’t really got it figured out just yet…”
Regina Spektor “On The Radio”
On an album that’s titled ‘Begin To Hope’…this is the most uplifting heartbreak song of this century. Spektor really tells us how it is to make us feel better about it all…”This is how it works, you’re young until you’re not. You love until you don’t. You try until you can’t. You laugh until you cry. You cry until you laugh. No! This is how it works. You peer inside yourself. You take the things you like. Then try to love the things you took. And then you take that love you make and stick it into someone else’s heart pumping someone else’s blood. And walk an arm in arm. You hope it don’t get harmed. And even if it does…you’ll just do it all again.” The best and most hopeful advice ever been given.
Coldplay “Everything’s Not Lost”
This used to be my song when nothing went right. It helped me reflect. It’s not a hard song to decipher as Chris literally tells you it’s going to be okay.. It’s simple and simple can be effective. Not to forget he secret song tied to this appropriately titled ‘Life Is Worth Living’.
Dierks Bentley “I Hold On”
Country music has always had a way of just ‘being there’ no matter how cheeky or blue collar it can get. That’s why it’s so effective. This song is just as simple as any other song but there’s a confidence/edge to it.. Dierks counts on the things that can keep him strong. His whole world is falling apart but he’s still holding on. It’s that persistence. What a fucking great song.
U2 “Walk On”
Sometimes you need guidance. And sometimes Bono can come back down from reality and be a friend. More a confidence booster than anything, this track is your best friend telling you to follow your dreams without fear. He’s telling you to leave all that bullshit behind. After listening to this, I truly believe everything is going to be okay.
The Flaming Lips “Do You Realize?”
From the moment the drums hit to the moment I get the feels. And the tears come rolling down the cheeks This has to be the most beautiful / uplifting song of the last 20 years. When you’re at your lowest, when you’re at your highest, this song will grab you and stop you and you will cry from the beauty of it all. Whatever it is, it’s an illusion. you’ll get over it. I hope you realize…how beautiful you really are…and how many people can see that…
