By Patrick DeMarco

It’s no secret that Philly Mixtape loves living that “Forgot About Friday” life every week, but lately, the tides MUST be turning, because your weekly serving of “5 reasons why” has been taking the top banana music spot when it comes to serving up music truth for you guys. For one, “5 reasons” allows us put out so much deliciously underrated music, and two, we get to musically educate you on artists who are flying under the radar, or in Ciara’s case, flying under the “Forgot About Friday” radar. Either way, “5 Reasons” is about showing that music love to artists who deserve it, and today we’re going to strip down and get down to some music lovin’ with someone you should absolutely be paying attention to-fabulously underrated singer/songwriter, Ester Dean.

Now, some of you may know Dean from “Drop It Low,” her hit single with Chris Brown, or as Cynthia in ‘Pitch Perfect,’ but there’s a lot that you may not know about this incredible diva. Philly Mixtape has been paying attention to Ms. Dean for quite a while now, so we came up with 5 convincing reasons why you guys should be as well. Music school is in session, kids…it’s time to pay attention to all things Ms. Dean…

1.She’s about to be all up in ‘Pitch Perfect 2’…

By now you guys know that ‘Pitch Perfect 2’ is set to hit theaters on May 15th, with all of the cast reprising their roles, including Ms. Ester, who will reprise her role as Cynthia-Rose. Those that saw the first film know that Ester’s cover of “Since You’ve Been Gone,” was one of the highlights of the movie, so let’s hope the diva gets more solo songs to belt out in the sequel. Either way, Ester’s quite a driving presence in the first film as the tom-boyish Ms. Cynthia, and maybe this time she’ll stop Anna Kendrick from terrorizing us again with yet another performance of “Cups” for the millionth time….just sayin…..

2.She’s got an interestingly delightful vocal quality….

The one thing about Ms. Dean that is quite intriguing is her very distinct singing voice. While she’s a strong mezzo-soprano, her voice contains a deliciously ripe, raspy quality that is very bizarre…in a groovy kind of way. Whether it’s on a Hip-Hop flavored track like “Drop It Low,” a cheeky pop tune or on a high powered dance track such as “We’ve Only Just Begun,” with DJ Michael Woods, it doesn’t matter…her unique vocal blends and tones will take you in and make you curious to hear more….

3.She’s a brilliant songwriter….whose written some of your favorite songs…

What does Kelly Clarkson’s “Since You’ve Been Gone,” Katy Perry’s “Firework” and Rihanna’s “Rude Boy” all have in common? They are just a few of the brilliant pop songs that Ms. Dean had a pen in co-writing. While she does have a tight music catalog of her own, the smash hits she’s penned for other music artists is really where she gets the music love in the industry. Who else has she written hits for? Let’s see….Trey Songz, Britney Spears, Robin Thicke, Christina Aguilera, Chris Brown, Ciara, Keri Hilson, Ludacris, Mary J. Blige….and about two-dozen more music artists. And that killer hook in Nicki Minaj’s highest charting hit, “Super Bass?”  All wrapped up in Ester….

4.Her new E.P., ‘Miss Ester Dean,’ equals yas…..

Next week, Ms Ester will release her first E.P., ‘Miss Ester Dean,” and Philly Mixtape caught a sneak peak of the set….and it’s short, sweet, and simply everything. ‘Miss’ is the perfect blend of snappy beats, light grooves, with just a dash of Hip-Hop flavor, all while Ms. Dean’s vocal chops fit comfortably underneath the flow which is provided for her. The trap-licious, “Jealousy,” is the perfect banger for spring, the DJ Mustard produced, “New Shit,” has that beat to bang in your trunk, and “Any Other Way,” “That Girl,” and the aptly named, “Fuck It,” have a rambunctiously raw feel to them while Ester’s vocals just own each track in every single way. Philly Mixtape’s favorite ‘Miss’ cut is “Keeper,” another trap-kissed ditty that has all the bass and the bounce you need to start paying attention to this brilliant talent….

5.Because of THIS trio songs you’ve probably never heard….

Do you guys want to know what Philly Mixtape’s favorite type of tracks are? The ones that never see the light-of-radio, and when it comes to Ms. Dean, she’s got a serving of saucy tunes that you guys have probably never heard….and they’re fucking amazing. First up, is the Nicki Minaj assisted, “Gimme Money,” a throbbing number with an absolutely scrumptious riddim rhythm. After one listen, you will absolutely want to ante it all up to Ms Dean..

The second track is “Death of Us,’ a groovy gem from a few years ago that was supposed to be for Rihanna to play with. But, we say, we’re so glad RiRi kept her talons off of it because we can treasure this stomping underplayed number for years to come…and never get sick of it…

Lastly…is this…Ester’s soaring rewire of Bonnie Raitt’s classic ’91 tune, “I Can’t Make You Love Me.” While nothing will ever compare to the breathtaking/heartbreaking original, Dean’s musical retelling will still give you THOSE chills….while making you dance at the same time. The Moto Blanco remix of Ester’s “Love” demo (the finished version actually went to Indian songstress, Priyanka Chopra.), is also a burning disco fire, and for that, all you have to do is go right here.

If you’re still not paying attention to Ms. Dean after all this music truth has been served up for you guys, then get lost in all of it again…because she isn’t going away anytime soon…
