Being that this is country diva kickstarter week, Philly Mixtape can’t think of a better country diva groove to kick up than “Achy Breaky Heart,” by Ms. Billy Ray Cyrus. Oh, wait…he’s not a diva…but, that mullet, though….
For those who may not have gotten to experience this global radio phenomenon, “Achy” is a country music song that was written by Don Von Tress, originally titled “Don’t Tell My Heart” and performed by The Marcy Brothers in 1991. A year later, the name was changed to “Achy Breaky Heart,” and performed by Billy Ray Cyrus for his ’92 album, ‘Some Gave All.’ As Cyrus’ debut single and signature song, it made him oh, so famous and has been his most successful single to date. The track also spun a million-and-one country line dances and pretty much terrorized radio for all of 1992…and beyond.
While Cyrus released follow singles and albums since then, none of have truly come close to matching the downright success that “Heart’ was. Fun fact-Billy Ray’s throwback track is considered by some as one of the worst songs ever recorded, landing at #2 on VH1 and Blender’s list of the “50 Most Awesomely Bad Songs Ever.” But, that mullet though…..
