Werkout Groove of the Day/Britney Spears/’I’m A Slave 4 U”

“I know I may be young, but, I’ve got feelings, too,” coos Ms. Britney on her sexed up ’01 hit, “I’m A Slave 4 U.” From the second those lyrics start purring underneath that Neptunes provided beat, we know that Ms. Spears is about to work it for the ages on her sexy smash single. Britney’s jam is not only one of the best tracks in the diva’s fierce music catalog, but it’s also her most sweatiest hit, which is purr-fect to take us through another Philly Mixtape morning werkout session. Even as the song approaches fifteen years since its release, ‘Slave’ is still as hot and steamy as ever with a beat that sounds like it could be served up on any one of today’s radio stations. If Britney’s hit doesn’t make you sweat, gyrate and put your pink thong on top of your jeans, well, your Philly Mixtape gym membership is getting revoked. When it comes to Britney’s ‘Slave,’ all you have to do is just listen….and get to werk, bitch.

10 Classic Thunderpuss Rewerks

Words can’t describe the feeling that comes over me whenever I hear the dance thunderstorm that is the Thunderpuss rewire of Tamia’s classic baby makin’ joint, “Stranger In My House.” For one, I get those fifth-letter-of-the-alphabet feelings all over again, and two, hearing the dazzling reworked disco ditties of this explosive production duo, well, it takes me back to a much simpler time, when I was just a young kid getting my groove thing on at now defunct Delaware Avenue nightclubs like Envy, Babylon, Baja, Maui(penny Budweisers!), and MOST notably, club Egypt. So,on that monstrous thundering rewerked beat, today, Philly Mixtape is serving up 10 classic remixes that will prepare you guys for when one half of the Thunderpuss duo, DJ Barry Harris, stops by for a music tea spillage this Friday on Philly Mixtape!

Oh, how I remember cruising down to the Avenue fresh from Bucks County, a nineteen year old young music bitch in training, not knowing what I was about to get myself into. There was nothing like pulling up to the parking across the street from Egypt, anticipating the night, jumping out of the car and having a dance party(Alice Deejay, perhaps?), smoking joints and drinking 40 oz’s of Colt 45… (Maybe, I did know what I was getting myself into. Sorry, mom.)

While I most certainly did have the underage time of my life back then, the music I was exposed to is what truly make those magical musical memories, especially if it was provided by Thunderpuss. Really, where do I begin? Remixes of some of the biggest diva hits ever to shatter our eardrums? Check. Sounds and production that sound like(and still do) no other of its time? Yas. Legendary DJs Barry Harris and Chris Cox joined forces to bring grooves so gigantic, they’re guaranteed to get even your grandma on that dance floor of life. From 1997-2003, these two iconic DJs just came in and destroyed charts, speakers and dance floors all around the globe, all while gearing this guy towards a life of DJ realness-and I’ve never looked back.

While I wish I could post every pulsating production Thunderpuss have magically crafted up, they have so much memorable material that we would be here until disco eternity sorting it all out. However, I went on a mission to pick out the stompers that best reflect that crazy late-’90s Delaware Ave era of my life (as well as a lot of you guys who are reading this), because let’s face it, they’re delectable offerings were throbbing in every single Philly club back then-and most certainly still are today. You ’90s kids can’t tell me that you didn’t get your triple-stacked-Mitsubishi on to their monstrous reworks of Billie Myers, “Kiss The Rain,” and Amber’s addicted-to-perfume groove, “Sexual.” Or perhaps a little roaring remix of Britney’s “I’m A Slave 4 U” will bring those seratonin memories rushing back? Of course, their warehouse destroying remix of Whitney’s(sigh…)’98 smash hit, “It’s Not Right, But It’s Okay,” will always go down as one of the greatest rewerks….ever in music history.

1.Katy Perry makes a big political statement during a stop in Taiwan for her ‘Prismatic World Tour’…

Last night, during her ‘Prismatic World Tour’ stop in Taipei, the capital city of Taiwan, Ms. Katy Perry donned the flag of the country as a cape while wearing a sunflower dress, an outfit with two-fold pro-Taiwan imagery. Sunflowers were the key image of the Sunflower Student Movement of spring 2014, which found groups protesting a Chinese trade agreement that many saw as unfair to Taiwan. But, today, some are wondering if Katy’s political imagery was intentional. The sunflower connection might be coincidental as Ms. Katy has worn the outfit on her world tour before. The Taiwan flag, however, was a new addition for her Taipei concert, but it’s unknown if Perry meant it as a political statement or simply as tribute to her audience. Regardless, many were moved by Katy’s efforts, with some writing they were touched or moved to tears on social media. It should be noted that the relationship between Taiwan (Republic of China) and China (People’s Republic of China) is quite tricky because some see Taiwan as an independent nation, while many others — including the United States — have formally adopted the “One China” policy, which adheres to the People’s Republic of China’s position that it is the sole legitimate government. An interesting way to make a point, Ms. Perry…

2.Alabama Shakes shake up the top spot on the Billboard 200…..

Funky rock band Alabama Shakes snatched their first No. 1 on the Billboard 200 chart as their new set, ‘Sound & Color,’ grabs a hold of the covered top spot. The album, which was released April 21, moved 96,000 albums its first week, according to Nielsen Music. The bulk of Sound & Color’s overall quota was powered by traditional album sales, as the set sold 91,000 copies, which in turn is the band’s best sales week ever. The new Alabama Shakes record also debuts at No. 1 on the Top Album Sales chart. The Shakes new set is led by the single “Don’t Wanna Fight,” which has spent the past six straight weeks in… the No. 2 slot on the Adult Alternative chart.

3.Hilary Duff reunites with ‘Lizzie Macguire’ cast….in a bowling alley…..

Get excited…..there was a Lizzie McGuire reunion this week, which arrived in a most fashionable way-by taking place at a bowling alley. As you will see in the Lizzie-licious pic, it’s Ms. Hilary, her one-time on-screen brother Jake Thomas, and TV BFF Lalaine Vergara-Paras taking a pic together between strikes.  The “Sparks” diva apparently can’t stop living the bowling life because in addition to this epic McGuire kiki, in an interview Tuesday, Hilary shared that she was going on a Tinder date that night with a total “normie” and that they would be bowling as well. To see the ‘LM’ reunion pic, go here.

4.Jay Z goes out of his way to prove the Tidal struggle isn’t as real as people think….

Jay Z is pulling out all the stops-and breaking out his B-sides-to hype up his sinking-like-the-Titanic music streaming service, Tidal. The rap legend announced plans Wednesday to unearth songs he hasn’t performed in a decade – or ever – at a free New York concert. The impromptu show will be held May 13 and subscribers can submit a playlist on the service to win tickets. This past Sunday, Jay Z took to Twitter to defend Tidal’s slow start, tweeting, “The iTunes Store wasn’t built in a day. It took Spotify 9 years to be successful. We are here for the long haul. Please give us a chance to grow and get better.” Guess we’ll just have to wait and see if indeed the Jigga Man’s service will prevail. Jay’s free concert will be streamed on-you guessed it-Tidal.com.
