Philly Mixtape Music Tea/ Le1f

Sitting in a tent with the air conditioning on us (we’re in the glamping area and yes…I hate the word too) I ask Le1f if he’s ready for an interview. He’s calm and collected after having performed in front of thousands less than an hour ago. My buddy DJ Javascript has just performed with him, reeling from the high, getting us started for another different kind of high. Le1f and I take the time to discuss his experience as a producer and our love for Bjork. It’s his calmness, shyness (not to be confused with his confidence) that carries throughout the time I spent with him on that particularly iconic day:

PM – Where are you from these days?
Le1f – (laughs). I’m from Harlem.

PM –  How was your first Firefly Festival experience?
Le1f – I thought it was very well received.

PM – How did you get your start as an entertainer?
Le1f – I was a child dancer. Went to a prep academy which also helped shape me as an artist.

PM – And you produce too?
Le1f –  Yes. I started in Fruity Loops like some of my peers in the computer labs at school, then transitioned into Logic and making my own sounds. I collaborated a lot with Boody where we tried to have a different process for every song. Javas (Javascript) and I have known each other since we were in the same town.

PM –  Who have been some of your biggest influences shaping you as an artist today?
Le1f – Emotions in art and in music. And art. Especially art. Don’t forget art.

PM – You do seem very in tune with you surroundings and projection as an artist. That’s a rare gift to have and even more rare to see these days. What about artists?
Le1f –  Aaliyah and most definitely Bjork.

PM –  I actually went to the Bjork exhibit at MoMa in New York. Fell in love with the experience sitting there in the theater with everyone watching her music videos. It was so cool.
Le1f – I loved that as well…those couches in the theater, it was like a playpen. I love her outfits in those videos. Every one of them are so different.

PM –  What have you been most excited about being here other than performing at Firefly?
Le1f –  My friends. Bear Hands and Lizzo. I’m really excited to see them perfom.

PM – So what can we expect from you next?
Le1f –  Clarity in my vocals.

Mixtape Music News/The Music Shade Is Real Edition

1.Iggy Azalea just put the final nail in her music career coffin…..

Yesterday, as we all read…because….Britney, during a Twitter Q&A with whatever fans she has left, Aussie “rapper” Iggy Azalea–who’s already having major career troubles–suggested the failure of her and Britney’s collab, “Pretty Girls,” might’ve been because of Spears’s lack of commitment to push it up the Billboard charts.

The future Forgot About Friday diva wrote: “It’s difficult to send a song up the charts without addition promo and TV performances etc. Unfortunately I’m just featured.” She then later added, “My comment is factual, it applies to any song. I don’t have to suck the woman’s asshole 24/7 to be her friend, do I? Bye girls.”

But, the best part of it all, besides watching Iggy Azalea throw away what’s left of her career, was when the queen herself, Ms. Britney responded in the most shadiest way possible, tweeting a passive aggressive aside about Azalea’s cancelled tour dates while referring to her own run in Las Vegas, where she has a very high paid two-year residency at Planet Hollywood.

“Can’t wait to get back to Vegas. So thankful I have shows for the rest of the year to look forward to,” she wrote, followed by what will go down as the hashtag of the year–#YouWantAPieceOfMe.

Enough said.

2.Someone drew a giant c#$k impaling Justin Bieber in the “Where Are Ü Now” video…

Whoops. Looks like someone in the graphics department might not have a job after this one…

Justin Bieber and Jack Ü (made up of superstar producers Skrillex and Philly’s Diplo) unleashed the bright, bold, artsy new video for their summer hit “Where Are Ü Now,” in which we see the 21-year-old Canadian pop bad boy covered in hundreds of fan-made doodles and designs.  To make the new clip, Bieber and Jack Ü invited fans to the Seventh Letter Gallery in Los Angeles to sketch on video stills that would later be incorporated over Bieber in the visual…..but it seems one participant apparently had a message to send – and it somehow made it into the final edit.

About two minutes into the video, a drawing of a large dick (it’s there. #research) appears right through the “Baby” singer’s torso, no doubt impaling the pop star. Ouch. It’s indeed a blink-and-you-miss-it moment, but lucky or you guys, Philly Mixtape has it right here…

3.Freddie Mercury laughing at Kanye West is everything….

While Kanye West may have declared himself the “greatest living rock star on the planet” at Glastonbury over the weekend (#LOL), there’s one person who really doesn’t agree–late, great Queen front man, Freddie Mercury. During his headlining set, West decided to take on Queen‘s “Bohemian Rhapsody,” with some saying he totally nailed it and others making it clear there is only one version of that song, always and forever. Now, a very loyal Queen fan—or, someone who just doesn’t like Kanye (Philly Mixtape thinks the latter) took the brilliant time to edit together footage of ‘Ye’s performance with classic footage of Mercury…

In the less than one-minute clip, Mercury throws back a beer and gets a good chuckle at Kanye as he pours his heart and soul out on lines like, “Mama, I just killed a man.” As we see, Mercury is clearly not feeling it–and through the magic of editing–Kanye is left looking sad and let down as Mercury begins to sing. You just have to watch….and get ready to laugh your ass off.

4.Nuns won’t let Katy Perry buy their convent…..

In your “WTF” music shade moment of the day….nuns won’t let Katy Perry buy their convent. Yes, you’re reading that correctly. Music truth be told, Katy Perry is currently caught up in a real estate habits-holding with a group of Los Angeles nuns. According to a report from The Los Angeles Times, Perry is trying to purchase a convent formerly inhabited by the Sisters of the Immaculate Heart of Mary and turn it into a home, but the nuns are alleging that they are the ones who have the right to sell the space.

Two weeks ago, the sisters signed over the property to an L.A. restauranteur for $15.5 million, but at the same time Archbishop Jose Gomez was attempting to sell the property to Perry for $14.5 million… cash.

But if this legal dispute weren’t strange enough, Ms. “Peacock” allegedly did some campaigning to sway the nuns. At a recent meeting, according to two of the sisters, Perry dressed conservatively, showed off her Jesus tattoo, and sang “Oh Happy Day.” No word on whether this Sister Act trick worked, but there was one nun who wasn’t buying it…

“Well, I found Katy Perry and I found her videos and I wasn’t happy with any of it,” Sister Rita Callanan told the Times. And she was all the more disappointed came across Perry’s high-flying Super Bowl performance. “I thought, is that a way to make money,” she explained. “Maybe I could fly around. I could be the flying nun.”

Philly Mixtape has no further comment on this matter, except for this…

5.Tracee Ellis Ross allegedly doesn’t think Tyga and Chris Brown are sexy…

While maintaining hosting duties at this past Sunday’s BET Awards, Black-ish star, Tracee Ellis Ross began to introduce Chris Brown and Tyga‘s live performance without any problems…but….after reading off the prompter that they were “young, sexy and black,” the diva awkwardly paused and seemed….trying really hard not to laugh.

While it’s possible that Ms. Ross was just waiting for more words to pop up, others (meaning Tyga and Chris Brown fans)interpreted this as all shade, implying that she couldn’t finish a sentence about the “young, sexy and black” duo with a straight face. However, Ms. Ross has gone on record to say that she didn’t mean any shade towards the boys. #LMFAO #LOL #ThatsAll

Independent Diva Groove of the Day/Kelly Clarkson/”Miss Independent”

Keeping on with your explosive playlist of independent divas as we get ready to commemorate the 4th of July this weekend, today Philly Mixtape is serving up “Miss Independent,” by the one-and-only, Ms. Kelly Clarkson. Cooked up as the lead single from her ’03 debut set, Thankful, the blaring pop number was written by Clarkson, Rhett Lawrence, Matt Morris and Ms. Christina Aguilera. Kelly’s top 10 hit was actually supposed to accompany Xtina‘s ’02 Stripped set, but due to the fact that it wasn’t finished in time to be on her album, it ended up going to Clarkson instead–and we’re all so glad it did. Not only did the cheeky pop ditty, um, break away the songstress from the Simon Cowell/A.I. music mold, but it indeed proved that she had chart staying power following the smash #1 debut of her winning single, “A Moment Like This.” Also, its theme of fierce diva self-sufficiency would continue to be a trend in all of the diva’s music following;further establishing her as the go-to chanteuse for when you really need a dose of that pop music life….that actually makes you think. Go on, Ms. Kelly

Plus, its accompanying video is always a romping good time…

Pass the summer music dutch….
