Hard to believe, but it was five years ago this week that “Teenage Dream,” the blockbuster title track from Katy Perry‘s sophomore album of the same name, hit the coveted summer airwaves. Ms. Diva was already riding the sun-soaked charts high with “California Gurls,” but leave it to her to deliver yet another Coppertone ready ditty. The Max Martin produced banger (naturally) plays out like a piece of pop sugar confection, complete with cheeky lyrics, a drenching guitar riff, and vocals from Ms. Katy that are in full diva force. The monster single also went to to become Katy’s 2nd number one from the album;following “Dream” with “Firework,” “E.T,” and “Last Friday Night(T.G.I.F)“,” all of which slept with the top spot, making her the only female in pop music history to deliver five #1 singles from the same album while matching Michael Jackson’s record of the same feat. (He delivered five #1 singles from ’87’s Bad)Of course, all of those number ones also went on to be covered on Glee, making the chart domination of Teenage Dream really seem like a million years ago.
Live it up for the weekend with Ms. Katy below.
