Beverly Hills, 90210 Groove of the Day/Paula Abdul/”Bend Time Back Around”

Ready….set….fist bump.

Here at Philly Mixtape, we would never want to make anyone feel their age on a Monday, but there’s a truth that we must all face together today-Beverly Hills, 90210 is about to be a quarter-of-a-century old.

The spectacular show about the lives of Donna Martin and friends premiered on October 4th, 1990, instantly reeling us into a world that was just full of shocks, surprises and Emily Valentine. Of course, we can’t ever forget the show’s pilot episode that dealt with the culture shock that twins Brandon (Jason Priestley) and Brenda Walsh (Shannen Doherty) were dealt with their parents, Jim (James Eckhouse) and Cindy (Carol Potter), forced them to move from chilly Minneapolis, Minnesota to bright and sunny Beverly Hills. In addition to chronicling the epic love triangle between Dylan, Kelly and Brenda, the show also addressed numerous topical issues like date rape, gay rights, alcoholism and diet pills.

While the show suffered a poor start in the ratings (it wasn’t Andrea Zuckerman’s fault), the series gained popularity during the summer of 1991 when FOX aired a special “summer season” of the show while most other series were in reruns, which led 90210 to become one of the network’s top shows when it began its next season that fall. The viewership increased dramatically and the cast members, particularly Priestley and (sigh) Luke Perry, became teen idols while also making household names of Shannen Doherty and  Jennie Garth. Oh, and Tori Spelling, too.

To commemorate this sideburns worthy occasion, all week-long, Philly Mixtape will be serving up classic music tales from the show’s accompanying soundtrack, which you know you still listen to on the daily. So, if you’re looking for a little Shanice, Jeremy Jordan (!) and Color Me Badd  lovin’ this week, you’ve certainly come to the right music place.

Kicking it all off is opener “Bend Time Back Around” by Ms. Paula Abdul, which coincidentally is the perfect track to blast today because after the monumental weekend Philly just experienced with Pope Francis’ highly esteemed visit, we all wish we could go back and do it all over again.
