Philly Groove of the Day/Joan Jett/”I Hate Myself for Loving You”

A Philly entertainment legend who clearly needs no introduction, Ms. Joan Jett and her merry band of Blackhearts have been representing the City of Brotherly Love music scene for nearly four (!) decades now. One of the most influential divas in rock history, the amplified stylings of Ms. Jett can easily be compared to the talents of rock legends Lou Reed, Bill Withers and former Rolling Stones guitarist Mick Taylor, who in fact joined the legendary rock goddess on today’s feisty Philly groove, the ’88 Billboard smash, “I Hate Myself for Loving You”

Served to radio as the lead single from the Joan Jett and the Blackhearts album Up Your Alley, the rockin’ number leather jacketed its way up to #8 on the Billboard Hot 100, becoming Jett’s third single to reach the Top 10. The angst-y sonnet also became her first top ten hit since “Crimson and Clover” all the way back in ’82, which was preceded by the rock queen’s biggest hit, “I Love Rock and Roll,” which owned the #1 spot earlier that year for seven consecutive weeks.

Let’s not also forget that it was just about a year ago when Joan Jett was rightfully inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame where her induction speech was given by the one-and-only Ms. Miley Cyrus (who loves Philly, too!), in which the “Wrecking Ball” swinger said….well, you just have to watch it all again. All of these fine tuned memories are all the more reason we just can’t wait for when Jett and her Blackhearts take the stage alongside Heart at the BB & T Pavillion this summer. If these music moments tell us anything, it’s that going to be one hell of a Philly show.

Rock on.
