Jam of the Day/Heather Headley/”In My Mind”/Freemasons Vocal Rewerk

While the soul destroying prowess of the original form of Heather Headley’s ’05 R&B ballad, “In My Mind” was already Kleenex ready, British disco duo Freemasons took it and turned into a pure club firestorm that still has the ability to take you onto the dance floor of life every time its pumping through the speakers.

Taking Ms. Headley’s on-point vocals and placing them on top of their trademark dance music stamp proved to be a huge success for Freemasons, as it would become one of their first of many, many Billboard dance chart dominating rewerks, which included pretty much every track from her B”Day record including “Deja Vu,” “Ring the Alarm,” and the floor filler that is the pulsating pair’s  “Green Light” refire.

For a much more healthy serving of re-grooves from Freemasons, you should check this out, but for now…let’s dance.

Jam of the Day/Mayer Hawthorne/”A Long Time”

Besides having a knack for creating catchy grooves that are all wrapped up in fresh retro soul music vibes, Mayer Hawthorne has also become known for blowing people’s minds with his eclectic and electric live shows, which is exactly what he’s going to do when he takes over Union Transfer tonight.

The stage name of DJ/producer Andrew Cohen, Mr. Hawthorne got his music start in Ann Arbor, Michigan as onetime member of the rap groups Athletic Mic League and Now On. After deciding to record some soul-driven material as a “joke,” he says, the music went beyond Hawthorne’s circle of friends and eventually made its way to Stones Throw label head Peanut Butter Wolf (best name ever), who at first thought he was hearing re-edits of obscure late-’60s/early-’70s soul singles, not the work of a multi-instrumentalist who laid it all down himself.

Since the release of his debut set, A Strange Arrangement Hawthorne has released a colorful music buffet of material (as well as performing alongside Jaded Incorporated and Jake One), along with his latest set, Man About Town, a smooth, silky record lavishly laced with all the right grooves that you’ll simply want to get down to, including the sex-ed up title track,  “Lingerie & Candewax,” “Breakfast in Bed,” and “Cosmic Love,” which will seriously make you just want to fuck right now…seriously.

However, out of all the tasty treats that Hawthorne has dished out through out through the shimmering years, it’s the funkdafied flow of “A Long Time” off of his 2011 set, How Do You Do that will really get you moving mostly because this video. Loaded with nostalgic dancing and strobe-lit sequined dresses, the life-ready clip features fabulous footage of a Detroit-based ’80’s TV show hosted by R.J. Watkins, “The New Dance Show,” a program Mayer has spilled was his favorite as a young child. Although the multi-talented music pimp doesn’t appear in the video, the groovy guys and gals who captivate us with their every single move are so on point that it doesn’t even matter.

All meaning, get ready to add a little Running Man into your Tuesday routine and get even more excited for Mayer Hawthorne at Union Transfer tonight.

As if that were possible.
