Thursday Music Truth

1.Missy Elliot is back….

Just watch.

2.Ariana Grande wants you to “Focus” on her at the American Music Awards….

Get ready to see that ponytail live and up close because Ariana Grande will be performing her new single, “Focus,” at this year’s American Music Awards.  This is actually the third year Ms. Thing has been invited to the annual music awards show, her first was the 2013 event, when she took home the new artist of the year trophy. And who can forget last year she performed “Bang, Bang” with Jessie J and Nicki Minaj, as well as delivering a medley of her songs “Problem,” “Break Free” and “Love Me Harder.” No one.

The “One Last Time” diva will join a line-up of previously announced performers which includes Macklemore & Ryan Lewis, Gwen Stefani, 5 Seconds of Summer, Nick Jonas, Demi Lovato, One Direction and Ms. Carrie Underwood.

The Jennifer Lopez hosted AMAs will drop on Sunday night, 8 E.T., Nov 22nd on ABC.

3.It’s official….Jennifer Aniston is a Belieber…..

It looks like Jennifer Aniston and Justin Bieber are now, um, friends.

While it’s unclear exactly where this already infamous picture was taken, Justin Bieber shared a fun photo of himself hanging out with Jennifer Aniston on Instagram yesterday. In the captionless black-and-white shot, Justin serves us with a shocked facial expression and Jennifer goes for an oh, so simple smirk.

Justin has been guest starring on The Ellen DeGeneres Show for “Bieber Week,” and so far, the singer has addressed his naked photo scandal and opened up about his famous ex, Selena Gomez. Most recently, Justin announced his upcoming Purpose world tour (which his Philly on May 7th, get those tickets here), with the announcement being accompanied by him hosting a fan Q&A at the Staples Center in L.A tomorrow, Nov 13th, the day his much-anticipated Purpose set drops.

4.Billboard counts down the Top 25 Greatest Pop Hooks of all time…

In what is probably the greatest music assignment ever, the magical musical team at Billboard decided to put their headphones together and cook up a memorable collection of pop tunes that in their humble music opinion have the greatest hooks of all time.

Artists included on the covered list are The Village People with their line dance behemoth, “YMCA,” Lady Gaga’s :”Bad Romance,” and one Ms. Jody Watley, whose irresistible ’80s smash, “Don’t Want You Me” has found a hoops-filled home on the list, which you can read right here

5.Philly has just been named number one concert city in North America…and hopefully next year, too.

On their recently compiled list of the 20 best North American cities for live music, Vivid Seats, a website customized for buying and selling music, sports and theater tickets, has just put Philly on top of the list. Looking at funkdafied factors like number of concerts and average ticket prices for upcoming live spectacles, the site gleefully noted that Philly makes its strides in finding a local music home for many genres including jazz, country and folk.

Another big factor was the addition of the brand new Fillmore Philadelphia to the live venue scene which has already held incredible concerts from Hall and Oates, Gary Clark Jr., Disclosure and Tove Lo. The city of brotherly love has also bred some of its very own incredible music artists, including indie players Kurt Vile, Marian Hill, and hip-hop legends The Roots, who’ve become even bigger household names since they began performing every night as the house band for The Tonight Show with Jimmy Fallon

With an upcoming 2016 concert roster that includes The Knocks, Jess Glynne, Bryan Adams, Carrie Underwood, Justin Bieber and Janet Jackson, it looks like Philly just might own the top spot next year. Plus, if that Will Smith/DJ Jazzy Jeff tour takes flight next year, Philly will be feelin’ real good.

Hump Day Music Truth

1.Alanis Morissette’s and James Corden’s updated take on ‘Ironic” is all you need in your life right now….

You just have to watch. It will all make sense.

2.Miley Cyrus is all up in the Winter issue of V magazine…

Remember back in August when Miley Cyrus hosted the MTV VMAs? Really, how can we ever forget. However, just in case you might’ve forgotten what a Miley fashion shit show it really was, in V magazine’s Winter issue, the sensual mag has a photo spread of the backstage shenanigans that took place at the once red-hot annual event (the show’s ratings this year where their worst..ever). Thinking about Miley Cyrus’ bonkers fashion antics (and then some) throughout the entire awards programming, it probably shouldn’t come as a shock to anyone to see a photo of Miley posing ceremoniously nude in the green room.

Also in the piece (which you can read right here), RuPaul’s Drag Race contestant Laganja Estranja went on give many thanks to Cyrus, spilling, “I have to thank Miley for f—ing shit up and teaching the nation through alienation, because we can’t do this by ourselves. Nobody can fight for equality or bring visibility to the marginalized singlehandedly. We have to talk together, work together, create art together, and maybe then we can carve out a solid place in the sun for a once underground subset of society. I look forward to this journey, because we are just getting started! OKURRR!!!!!”

The next chapter of Miley’s Philly journey will take place when she hits the Electric Factory stage on Dec 4th with her Dead Petz (aka The Flaming Lips), no doubt putting on a show that none of us will ever forget anytime soon.

3.Steven Tyler has apparently “abandoned” Aerosmith….

With the recent announcemnt that Aerosmith postponed their 2016 touring plans because Steven Tyler wants to focus on his solo country music career, guitarist Brad Whitford spilled to a Billboard recently, “We kind of feel a little bit abandoned by him. I guess he seems to think his solo career is going to go great guns, and he doesn’t seem to realize that – in my opinion – his fans around the globe want to see him in the context of Aerosmith and don’t really care for whatever he thinks he’s gonna do.”

Whitford also went on to say that there was absolutely no talking Tyler out of it, though Billboard reports that the band would likely play some South American dates late next year. “I can’t put a gun to his head,” Whitford said. “It’s just pretty disappointing.”

Meanwhile, we’ll just watch the iconic video for “Janie’s Got A Gun” over and over again.

4.Azealia Banks is under fire for her oh, so crazy ways once again…..

In what’s been quite a drama filled year (no time to rehash, there’s only so many words you can fit on a page) for wannabe music star Azealia Banks, it’s now been reported that the bitch is under investigation by the Los Angeles Police Department for criminal battery after allegedly assaulting a security guard at a nightclub, according to TMZ.

In the exclusively-obtained-by-TMZ video of the incident,  which took place at Break Room 86 in Los Angeles late last month, Banks and her friends were asked to leave the club because of “unruly behavior,” and on her way out….sigh….Ms. Banks reportedly tried to pull the fire alarm.

It was from there that Banks was grabbed by a security guard, after which members of her esteemed clique rushed to pull him off of her. But it was then that Banks can then be seen jumping the guard and hitting him repeatedly along with her crew until another security guard arrives and breaks up the scuffle.

Yikes. For the rest of Azealia Bank’s never ending drama story, get your TMZ truth on right here

5.This year’s American Music Awards are really looking to be something….

After a line up of music stars which includes Pentatonix, Selena Gomez, Nick Jonas, One Direction, Carrie Underwood and Walk The Moon, it’s just been announced that Coldplay, Macklemore & Ryan Lewis and Ms. Gwen Stefani will premiere their new songs at the 2015 American Music Awards.

Coldplay will deliver the U.S. television debut of their fun new single, “Adventure Of A Lifetime,” the first single from the overseas band’s anticipated A Head Full of Dreams set (out Dec. 4), while Macklemore & Ryan Lewis promise to premiere a new song that isn’t  “Down Town” for the first-time ever on TV.

But all eyes will certainly be on Ms. Gwen as she will perform her Gavin Rossdale dedicated track,  “Used to Love You” for the very first time on live T.V. If Gwen’s raw, real video is any indication of the performance she’ll deliver, pass the Kleenex already, please.

ABC will air the AMAs live from Los Angeles’ Microsoft Theater on Nov. 22, with grand diva Jennifer Lopez performing and taking on hosting duties for the first time.

Tuesday Music Truth

1.Prince just announced a European solo tour….

Hot off the live music press, the legendary Prince has just announced that he will embark on a solo acoustic European tour. Dubbed  Piano and a Microphone, the title seemingly fits because those are the only two things The Purple One will be sharing the stage with when he kicks things off in Vienna next Saturday night, Nov 21st.

Not one to shy from doing things his way, The Guardian reported this past weekend that Prince invited a notepad full of European journalists to his 55,000-square-foot compound in Minneapolis to announce the upcoming spectacle, where he reportedly explained because of the fact he “rarely gets bad reviews,” he decided to gamble on a piano blessed stage set-up that will feel “more naked, more pure.”

Just think, if the European leg does well (which it definitely will), you can be certain that it will only be a matter of time before he takes Piano and a Microphone stateside.

We can only hope.

2.Cobra Starship has just called it quits….

After a decade of putting in that werk in the music industry and serving us with hits, “Good Girls Go Bad” and “You Make Me Feel,” Billboard is reporting that Cobra Starship has broken up.

In a spill with the music industry bible, frontman Gabe Saporta broke tea mugs about it all, including on how he’s looking to shift into the business end of the industry and whether or not a Cobra Starship farewell tour could possibly happen over the next few months.

“I’m not opposed to doing farewell shows, but for me right now, we don’t want to release anything that we just had, and have it be half-assed… For me it’s like, do it one hundred percent, or don’t do it,” Saporta spilled to the mag.

3.Pharrell, Bruce Springsteen, Jill Scott and many, many more are taking the stage to perform for a powerful message…

In what just might be one of the biggest televised live music events ever, it’s been announced that A+E Networks and iHeartMedia will join forces for Shining a Light:A Concert for Progress on Race in America. The massive a two-hour benefit special will feature Pharrell Williams, John Legend, Bruce Springsteen, Zac Brown Band and Philly divas Jill Scott and P!nk, all of whom will be performing songs meant to inspire a constructive and respected dialogue about race relations in America. Plans for the anticipated event were set into motion after the horrific June killing of nine people at a historic black church in Charleston, S.C.

“Race is … not an easy thing to talk about and sing about,” spilled Rob Sharenow, executive VP/GM of A&E and Lifetime. “The artists that are coming forward see it as a unique opportunity to engage in a conversation that’s often not talked about. It’s become more than a concert. Based on the artists’ reactions, particularly Pharrell, we’ve expanded it to include conversations on race in places all over the country where we bring people in the community together … with the artists to talk about their experiences. I don’t think anyone has ever attempted to put together something quite like this, on this scale.”

The event will film Nov. 18 at Los Angeles’ Shrine Auditorium and will air across six A+E Networks (A&E, Lifetime, History, H2, LMN and FYI), and iHeartMedia will support the concert across its radio stations and digital platforms. To get you ready for the event, DJ Allie Teilza has cooked up a special playlist of all the wonderful music artists below.

4.A three-year-old DJ just won South Africa’s Got Talent

In this music life, sometimes you can and sometimes you can’t. What I personally can’t believe is how incredible and mind-blowing DJ Arch Jnr is. Oh, and did I mention he’s just three-year-old and just became the youngest winner ever of South Africa’s Got Talent?

The groovy little guy, whose career began at age two when his father (who is also a DJ) began posting clips of him behind the decks on YouTube, took home the reality show’s top prize this past Sunday night.

If you’re looking for a little inspiration on this dreary Tuesday, watch Arch JR’s winning performance below–and you better put your music pearls on because you’re going to want to clutch them after you watch.

5.Philly’s Questlove remembers Allen Toussaint….

In what is certainly sad news for the music industry, it’s been reported that soul and R&B legend Allen Toussaint died yesterday at the age of 77 following a concert in Madrid. Tributes from fellow musicians have already begun pouring in, including Philly’s own Questlove who also took the time to remember Toussaint’s eclectic influences and genius musicality.

The Philly DJ and drummer remembered the New Orleans legend in an Instagram essay that spanned Touissant’s Lee Dorsey years all the way up to Amerie’s “1 Thing”

“I can go on and on. Because his work goes on and on,” Mr. Questlove stated. said, “His work will now speak for itself.”
