Academy Awards Performance of the Day/Bruce Springsteen/”Streets of Philadelphia”

Chilling…hypnotizing…beguiling.

Those are just a few words we can come up with to describe the legendary Bruce Springsteen’s powerful performance of his somber Philadelphia tune at the 1994 Academy Awards. Looking poised in an elegant suit, The Boss stole the show that night taking home the Oscar for Best Original Song and managing to have everyone in the whole entire world reaching for a Kleenex at the very same time.

And you certainly will once again once you relive Mr. Springsteen’s iconic Oscars music moment. Breathtaking at its very, very best.

1.Bruce Springsteen’s groundbreaking Born to Run set is now 40 years old….

Forty years ago today, New Jersey‘s Bruce Springsteen released Born to Run, the album that would launch him into the rock-and-roll stratosphere.

While the albums incredible title track already attracted a small cult following, at the time of its release, Springsteen desperately needed a break from himself. Despite vigorous promotion by Columbia Records, his first two albums, Greetings from Asbury Park, N.J. and The Wild, The Innocent, and the E Street Shuffle, were major commercial flops. Although his infamous band spent their every waking music moment either in the recording studio or on tour, the struggle was still certainly real-until Born to Run hit headphones everywhere on August 25th, 1975.

Desperately searching for their smash single, in late 1974 Mike Appel, Bruce’s manager, distributed a rough edit of the title track to select radio stations around the area. Within a very short time, the song became an underground hit as young people stampeded record stores seeking copies of Bruce’s single, which in fact, didn’t exist yet. Right here in Philly, the demand for the music truth loaded title track was so strong that WFIL, the city’s top-40 AM station, spun it out multiple times each day. Over in Cleveland, the DJ Kid Leo played the song religiously at 5:55 p.m. each Friday afternoon on WMMS, to “officially launch the weekend.”

Beautifully mixed with the E Street Band’s insatiable blend of horns, keyboards, guitars, and percussion, “Born to Run” was a big, bold ballad of escape, laced with cultural references that working-class listeners recognized immediately. The song would finally give Bruce and his band the credit they rightfully deserved, all while Mr. Springsteen would soon be honored with the title, “The Boss.” And when it came to the Born to Run-era, he most certainly was.

2.Carrie Underwood drops new album details and cover art….

After taking time off to become a mama, Carrie Underwood is returning with a new record, Storyteller, this fall. But despite being a chart-topping country diva for a decade (!), Ms. Carrie admitted that she’s a little nervous about her upcoming studio set.

“This is the longest time I’ve taken between studio albums,” the “Before He Cheats” singer told EW. “I’ve been listening to some of these songs for two years and to still be excited about them is great but then it’s like ‘Oh my gosh, is everybody else going to like it?’ I’m more nervous now that I’ve taken time.”

But now that the reaction to Storyteller’s lead single “Smoke Break” has been nothing but positive, longtime seem more than eager to lasso in her new set.

“Never have I heard a new single on the radio the day it was released…until today!” Ms. Carrie tweeted last week. “Woo hoooo!!! I think it’s a good sign!”

Take a “Smoke Break” with Ms. Carrie below.

3.Selena Gomez tells the U.K.’s Sunday Times how she really feels about Taylor Swift…

Oh, Jelena…

It was just a short time ago that Selena Gomez and Justin Bieber broke our tween music hearts by announcing their breakup. While the public has seemed to not let it go like in Mariah in ’91 when it came to their breakup, Ms. Gomez has certainly done so, but recognizes the fans’ struggle to keep it real.

“It’s difficult for people to separate us,” the “Good For You” songstress told the U.K.’s Sunday Times. “The Internet wants to freeze this moment in time and constantly repeat it.”

The 23-year-old diva also opened up to the newspaper about Bieber and their very public “are-they-or-aren’t-they?”  relationship, which kicked its up its heels nearly five years ago. Gomez, who displayed her Biebs heartbreak on last year’s “The Heart Wants What It Wants,” touched on the pressures she faced while dating Bieber, citing the media and her young age.

“I didn’t think I was doing anything bad by falling in love,” she said. “There’s such an emphasis on people being the perfect thing and then destroying them because it’s good press. Throw in the fact that you are a teenager — it makes it more difficult.”

But despite her struggles with love, Gomez also said that besties like like Taylor Swift are always there to have her back.

“I can count on one hand the people I could call and who would be there for me,” she said. “Taylor is one of the greatest people. When I split with my first boyfriend and I was really sad about it, she flew into town with homemade cookies and a bunch of junk food.”

Enough said.

4.Kim Kardashian just stole Beyonce’s Instagram wig…

Say it isn’t so..

Blue Ivy’s baby momma is no longer the Queen of Instagram. This is sad, but true, as Beyonce has officially been dethroned by the one and only (?) Kim Kardashian.

With a total of 44.1 million followers, Kardashian surpassed Beyonce’s 44 million as of yesterday, reports Tech Insider. The site shared Kardashian and Beyonce’s exact numbers of followers, and the difference isn’t even 70,000 (Kardashian is at 44,005,604 with Beyonce at 43,935,648).

Although the two ladies have been neck and neck for a long time, Kardashian has been gaining followers at a faster rate — most likely its because of that chest selfie she took to celebrate 42 million followers a couple of weeks ago. Kardashian has also posted about three times as many pictures as Beyonce, sitting at a whopping 3,022 posts when she took over Instagram’s top spot.

And just who is 3rd Instagram place with 43.7 million followers? You guessed it….Taylor Swift.
