“Rewerk Wednesday”/Cahill

Last year, my favorite remix of the year was the explosive Cahill redo of Zendaya’s gummy groove, “Replay.” Not only does this tantalizing trio’s rewire of Ms. Z’s hit take the original to blissful new music heights, but it truly proves that they’ve got it in the bag when it comes to creating delicious dance thunderstorms. However, that’s only the tip- of- the -laptop when it comes to this explosive UK dance production trio. So on that replayed beat, let’s get our “Rewerk Wednesday” on, shall we?

Hailing from their music mother Adele’s homeland, Cahill consists of three pulsating DJ/producers-Anton Powers, Tim Condran and Scott Rosser. The trio first joined forces ’07, teaming up with soul seductress Nikki Belle, recording the titanic track, “Trippin On You.” While the song got off to a fine start throbbing in Liverpool nightclubs, it soon wound up on global dance charts everywhere, and the rest is heart pumping music history.

After the success of “Trippin,” the dynamic trio recorded two more funkdafied firestorms with Ms. Belle, “Sex Shooter” and “Crush On You,” which would then lead them to remixing some of the hottest names in the music game-Mariah Carey, Rihanna, Enrique Iglesias and Selena Gomez, just to name a few. Cahill even collaborated with now defunct former ‘AI’ diva, Kimberly Locke on a delectable dittie called, “Feel The Love,” even providing their own remix, transforming it into a slice of pure disco heaven.

If I had to pick out my favorite Cahill reworks, we would basically be here for hours. Looking in my music vault, ¬†at the top of my list would be their rewiring of Alexis Jordan’s(BIG sigh…) cheeky hit, “Hush, Hush,” their soaring take on Mariah’s “Obsessed,” and any one of their five remixes they’ve served up for Nicole Scherzingers’ almost-there-but-not-quite-maimstream solo hits will do just fine.

However, if I had to absolutely pick out my favorite reworked Cahill opus, it would be their torching of the smash Agnes(another…BIG…sigh) track, “Release Me.” However, don’t take my headphones for it, Ms. Agnes’ heart wrenching groove only kicks off a luscious list of lively reworked wonders brought to you by Cahill. Dive in.

“Rewerk Wednesday”/Peter Rauhofer

You guys know by now that I used to run a fun little DJ business back in the ’00s day, and since I’ve begun my music writing gig, I kind of miss it a little bit. Perhaps it’s because I’m surrounded by incredibly talented DJs on a daily basis, who constantly school and reeducate me on all of the classic turntable wizards who paved the way for all of the newer rework acts that own the dance charts and floors these days. I’ve also been deep-dittie diving into my music vault as of late, reworking myself with all of that tasty club music that I used to seductively spin way back when. With that being said, the formula for “Rework” won’t be changing too much, it will now take on an old-school-meets-new-school vibe, alternating classic DJs like Victor Calderone, Thunderpuss and Todd Terry, while mixing in newer acts like Cahill, Country Club Martini Crew and Matvey Emerson, just to spin off a few. On that pounding bass thump, I can’t think of a greater DJ to lead the reinvented “Rework” pack for 2015 than the dearly departed DJ legend himself, Mr. Peter Rauhofer.

Icon….creator….house music pioneer….Grammy winner. (for his slick remix of Cher’s “Believe.”) Yes, these are only just a few words I can find to describe the pumping productions and mesmerizing music catalog of Mr. Rauhofer. His reworks were(and most certainly still are) well built fortresses of groove stomping smashes that have the ability to destroy the floor whenever they begin throbbing through the system. Really, Peter(along with the dearly departed, Frankie Knuckles) was a pulse pioneer, and there will truly be no other house DJ that will even come close to matching his powerful presence in the industry. When he sadly passed away from brain cancer almost two years ago at the gone-too-soon age of 48, a tribute piece was one of the first articles that I ever wrote for Philly Mag. While I was extremely saddened to hear about his passing at the time, it was truly an honor to write about a man who really knew his creative craft.

I remember I first got introduced to the work of Mr. R when he was mixing it up with Club 69 and Size Queen back in the mid-’90s. When I first heard his mixes of Funky Green Dogs “Fired Up,” Ultra Nate’s “Found A Cure,” and Suzanne Palmer’s “Hide U,” my crazy little DJ life truly began. For more on the dearly departed legend, I’ve posted the link to my Philly Mag tribute piece below, as well as ten of my favorite Rauhofer reworks for you guys. Bow down to the dearly departed DJ legend and get your first “Rework Wednesday” of 2015 on.
