Table Talk w/Marti Gould Cummings

Stunning………fierce drag diva…….political activist…….hilarious comedian…..loving husband…..trailblazer… and….yes, bitch……this year’s rightful snatcher of the Entertainer of the Year Award at this past Monday night’s Glam Awards in New York City

Yes, kids, kweens, guys and gals from the all around the just-be-who-you-be globe, these are just some of the many, many accomplishments acquired on the local drag and-then-some resume of not just one of the hardest working queens in NYC…..but of the whole entire country, Marti Gould Cummings

But perhaps Ms. Cummings greatest accomplishment is that voice.

And it’s not just a voice that knows how to slay a jazzed up rendition of a Brit Brit classic (keep spilling), but a voice that has reached across the political world and has inspired others to be who you are and to be heard like nobody’s f@@king business…and she’s certainly doing one hell of a fabulous job.

Of course, it’s all while slaying our drag entertainment lives at the same time.

Ms. Cummings was also ridiculously kind enough to show a little NYC-to-Philly love and took time out of her slaying schedule to spill some tea with Philly Mixtape, where the two of us sat around the table and read tea leaves about humble beginnings, The Glam Awards, where this is all heading, and just why, oh, why it’s just so important for you (yes, you) to keep finding that voice and let it reach from beyond the distance….

…….because that’s exactly what she’s doing for all of us. So, take a seat, take a sip, and get to know this extraordinary East Coast owning talent…you’ll certainly be glad you did.

Kicking off our spill, and first, I personally appreciate you showing a little NYC-to-Philly love on the site! Okay, so….how did the fabulous world of Marti Gould Cummings all come to be?  Oh, gurl…it all started on a farm in Maryland and then I landed in NYC right out of high school. I accidentally fell into drag and it changed my life!

Let’s break some fine mugs about The Glam Awards in NYC that were held and served this past Monday night……….condragulations on taking home the Entertainer of the Year Award! Spill on just how was the show in all of its fabulousness…..and what went through your mind when you heard your name called? The show was lit! It was so major having bob the drag queen and peppermint there as host. I loved getting to see so many from our community gathered in one space. The performances slayed and showed how powerful and diverse NYC nightlife is. When my name was called I felt a wave of joy through my entire body. It was an overwhelming moment of gratitude.

The last part of your acceptance speech was very heart warming and moved this butch kween to a tear or twelve. –thank you. Without my damn self ruining its magic, send that message for the kids about the powerful words you served… I spoke about a moment of going to my home town in drag and meeting young people there who are coming to terms with their own identity as queer.  We never know the impact of our drag. Drag is powerful and important.

Okay, gurl, let’s gab about Andy Cohen. You’ve been to the Clubhouse for WWHL …and I just have to know….is it big? The studio, I mean, well, maybe….spill your tales of Ms. Andy….It is actually a very, very small room but looks big on TV! It’s always a lot of fun being there. Getting to be on TV with Goldie Hawn and Carol Burnett was insane and wild!

And then there was a video of you I saw of you werkin’ those vocals out to a jazzed up version of “Oops..I Did it Again,” if I’m not mistaken? What was going on there?  At the beginning of January,  I was performing at Lincoln center as part of the Big Apple circus series they were doing with queer artist. My husband, Mr. Blake Allen, arranged all of the music and conducted the band!

Okay, onto a serious sip..and it’s all about owning your voice, and you certainly do. Why is it so important for not just you, but for everyone to be heard?  I always say the election may be over, but the revolution has just begun. We must stay loud and visible and not allow history to repeat itself.

Do you think we’ll ever get the fuck out of this..mess?  I think the young people will safe our nation and world.

What else is on your 2019 agenda this year? I can imagine…everythang.  Oh God, stay tuned!

Sum up your 2019 ambitions and goals in one word or sassy little phrase….   Be booked, blessed, beautiful and don’t be afraid to speak out!

One last sip….when are you coming to Philly? I hope soon!

Table Talk w/Eric Jaffe

When it comes to finding the perfect words to describe everything that Philadelphia Gayborhood entertainment superstar, Eric Jaffe, serves out at any given second in our Gay Philly lives, it all comes down to three words.…..

That’s because when it’s comes down to rockin’ and ownin’ balloon haute couture like nobody’s business, Lady Gaga’s Golden Globes gown ain’t got nothin’ on the purple-owned lewks that  Jaffe has been known to serve out around the ‘Hood at any one of his events.

Anyone that’s witnessed, well, any one of them will certainly agree that…..yes, bitch, yes.

Of course, it’s all from the delightfully cray mind of the other half of Eric’s delightfully cray mind, Mr. Greg, but before we serve up that sweet part of the tea (and you might want to grab a Kleenex..because ’tis), we must find the proper words to describe Sir Jaffe…

How about….ridiculously talented….. fabulous actor…… ukulele champion…..hostess with the mostest….a big-hearted Jewish gentleman, and shall we mention, rightful recipient of the Drag Queen of the Year Award at last year’s Philly Drag Awards!

Can we get another yes, bitch, yes…yaaaaaas

But perhaps to best describe Eric is to say that when it comes to the creative art of just being your fucking self, he’s doing a heaping of werkin’ and slayin’ to inspire others, and twerkin’ and twirlin‘ on all of the haters.

Which is why there’s truly no better tea spiller to break in Philly Mixtape‘s new Table Talk column as Mr. Eric Jaffe is going to be at the head of the Philly entertainment table all year-long and beyond….now, take a seat and get ready for it all, kids and kweens, because Mr. Jaffe is speaking, and we must listen right…now,

Okay….so……we have this here whole entire box of Celestial Seasonings to mug through, but we must break ’em first on one of your debut accomplishments of the year, Thweeney Todd, I believe it’s called? Thpill, thpill, thpill….For years I have been honing in on my skills as a parody music writer. I had the idea to bring this passion of mine to a fuller scale and create an entire parody musical, and just jumped right in. Now that the show is up on its feet I can proudly say that this is the best piece of queer theatre that I have every created. The cast is SO insanely talented. Andrew Boyask is the perfect Thweeney Todd, capturing every essence of classic Sweeney mixed with my weird sense of humor, it’s simply perfect. I knew that this show would be funny, but i didn’t know that it would SOUND as incredible as it does. The show runs January 26th at 7pm and January 27th at 7pm and 10pm at Franky Bradley‘s. Tickets are available right here!

What was the audition process like, well, for all of it?? We asked people to prepare a 16 bar cut from any musical, and then we had them read short scenes from the show. It was wonderful to watch people to dive in to the ridiculous world that I’ve created with this show. Having such talented artists on board is such an honor.

Why do you think a show like Thweeney Todd is just so damn important for the Gayborhood and beyond? Drag is SO much more than what we see on TV. There is a queer underbelly of talent that is waiting to be overturned, and I hope to be a part of that. Bringing drag and queer art into a theatrical setting is so important, and I’m beyond ecstatic to be doing it.

So, gurrrrrrl….you snatched the Philly Drag Award for Drag Queen of the Year not too long ago! In a word…..that feeling that took over when you heard your name called was like….. It was overwhelming, unbelievable, and validating. I love this community so much, and it’s really great to feel the love in return.

But, you know, the slight shade of it as well…any sips of tea for those pesky haters out there? All of us independent divas have ’em…. Nothing to say, just an invitation to my next show!
Most importantly, what would you personally say to anyone young dude, diva, king or kween who magically stumbles into their creative light this year? Create your own path. Don’t wait for people to hand it to you.

And of course, how about a little love man for your man Greg who so carefully crafts those balloon costumes that no doubt slay the creative runway each and every pop…..My heart. Greg is just one of the most brilliant artists I have ever met, along with being the most kind, compassionate, and caring partner. I love him with my whole heart, and I thank him for inspiring me to elevate my artistry to match his.

Sum up your energy heading into 2019 in one sassy word….MAC N CHEESE…is that one word?

Yes…and I just have to know….where the fuck do all of those balloon costumes go when you’re done owning us with them? Please tell me that they’re preserved in The Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York or something…. We bring them home and let them shrivel up in something we call the “balloon graveyard.”

And there you have it.

For much more with Mr. Jaffe, catch him as your host of the Everything show every Wednesday night at 10 pm at L’Etage …..and as the host of The Eric Jaffe Show this Saturslay night, January 19th, at 730 upstairs at Tavern on Camac…and as always, ding, no cover, bish! See you there!
