Philly Groove of the Day/Patti LaBelle/”New Attitude”

If there’s any diva whose magnetic career has showcased fierce displays of Philly music truth over the years, it’s certainly the long-lasting music legacy of Ms. Patti LaBelle. From her soaring start in the City of Brotherly Love to owning her spot as the front woman of the vocal group, Patti LaBelle and the Bluebelles (later known as Labelle) into a wildly successful solo career, the living local music legend has rightfully owned her top spot in Philly’s rich music history. Even today, Ms. Patti still captivates our local music hearts with her powerful presence, those undeniable eardrum destroying vocal wails, her oh, so delicious sweet potato pies, and of course, her always ready to serve hit single, “New Attitude” always gets the diva job done.

An aerobics class ready synth-ed up ride of a tune, “New Attitude” was recorded for the soundtrack to the 1984 Eddie Murphy box office smash, Beverly Hills Cop, and would not just become  a diva anthem for the ages, but the fiery track would also become LaBelle’s first major solo smash on the Billboard Hot 100 (it peaked at # 17), a feat in which the soulful songstress hadn’t accomplished following the break-up of Labelle seven years prior.

And while we could spill local music tea all day on the song’s accompanying video, those of us who’ve reveled in it time-and-time again know that there are truly no words to describe it…just watch and celebrate your “New Attitude” right now.

Ms. Patti is ready and waiting for you.
