15 Classic Earth, Wind & Fire Singles

Widely regarded as one of the most critically acclaimed and funk-alicious bands of the ’70s, Earth, Wind and Fire are the beacon of shining music truth. Conceived by bandleader, songwriter, kalimba player, and occasional vocalist Maurice White, the group maintains a funk foundation, while incorporating smooth soul, gospel, pop, rock & roll, blues, African music, and disco into their massive catalogue of strobe light shattering hits.

White kickstarted Earth, Wind & Fire in Chicago in 1969. He had previously crafted his music skills as a session drummer for Chess Records, where he played on songs by the likes of such music legends as Fontella Bass, Billy Stewart, Etta James, and many more. Before forming EWF, he replaced Redd Holt in the popular jazz group the Ramsey Lewis Trio, where he was soon introduced to the kalimba, an African thumb piano he would use extensively in future projects. A few short years later, he left Lewis’ group to get his groove on with keyboardist Don Whitehead and singer Wade Flemons, who became a band called the Salty Peppers. While the fresh-on-the-scene group made their respective mark on the music map with a moderate hit called, “La La Time,” a follow-up single flopped, and Mr. White decided to move to Los Angeles, taking most of his band with him and renaming  them Earth, Wind & Fire, after the three elements in his astrological charts. And from there, the rest is pretty much soul-kissed music history.

Whether getting their Motown harmonizing on, working out a shimmering groove, or mixing it up with some jazz fusion, there’s no need to argue that EWF just musically has it. While their climb to the top wasn’t an easy one (Sadly, during the 1976 sessions for EWF’s breakthrough set, Spirit, member Charles Stepney died suddenly of a heart attack.) but their powerful, punchy tunes and elaborate stage shows have made them the unstoppable force that they still are today. Tomorrow night, the legendary music artists are taking their explosive collection front-and-center at the Susquehanna Bank Center alongside veteran rock act, Chicago, and you can guarantee that it will be a funky evening to remember.

To get everyone fully prepared for the show tomorrow night, Philly Mixtape is serving up these classic singles which includes hits, “Shining Star,” “September,” “Serpentine Fire,” and many more that will certainly put some “Boogie” back in your “Wonderland.”

Ready..set…let’s groove tomorrow night.
