15 Classic Aaliyah Grooves

Tomorrow will mark fourteen years since the music world lost a princess when the small plane carrying R&B songstress Aaliyah, along with eight others, crashed in the Bahamas, sadly killing everyone on board. At the time of her tragic and oh, so unfortunate death, Ms. Aaliyah was an absolute force to be reckoned with, serving up hit singles and albums, as well as quickly becoming a bona fide movie starlet, appearing in films, Romeo Must Die and Queen Of The Damned. It also didn’t hurt that our girl had Timbaland and Missy Elliot by her side as the three of them were always cooking up unforgettable collaborations back then. “Up Jumps Da Boogie” all day…

On a personal note, Aaliyah was–and still most certainly is–one of those singers whose music will never stop bumping-and-grinding through the Philly Mixtape headphones. Whether in the club, bumpin’ beats in the trunk or bangin’ headboard in the bedroom, the sultry grooves and slinky melodies of the late, great Aaliyah are always on point.

While there are many people out there who are familiar with the fallen diva’s werk, there may be a few out there who haven’t gotten lost in Aaliyah’s music magic. So, as we get ready to mourn the anniversary of the “Try Again“chanteuses’s death,  Philly Mixtape has these classic ‘Liyah singles ready to go that will have you throwing your hands up in the air….and then some. Because as we all know, there will never be another fiery R&B diva in our music lifetime quite like Ms. Aaliyah.

Miss you, boo.

Summer Groove of the Day/Nelly Furtado/Timbaland/”Promiscuous”

Whoa, Ms. Nelly…

Cooked up as the lead single from her luscious Loose set, Nelly Furtado & Timbaland‘s “Promiscuous” romp sexed its way up in the charts in the summer of ’06–and we loved every beat of it. Written by Ms. Furtado and Mr. Tim, the cheeky track serves up  lyrics that play out as a verbal Ping-Pong game on top of a stomping beat which was so effortlessly provided by Timbaland. (This was 2006.)

The song was welcomed with open music arms by critics, but of course there were other critics who claimed that Nelly F was “selling out” to the pop game being that her sexy new image was a far folk cry from earlier days when was soaring like a bird. Whatever the music case might’ve been, the track was an international success and also became Furtado’s first #1 single stateside. The slutty banger also went on to win Billboard‘s “Best Pop Single of the Year” and was rightfully nominated for a Grammy for Best Pop Collaboration with Vocals the following year.

While we certainly miss Nelly Furtado these days (really, where have you been, girl?), there’s no denying that “Promiscuous” is just as fun as it was back in the good ol’ Loose days.

Missy Elliot and Timbaland Are Making Studio Magic Again

Looking at the title of this article alone, it’s enough to give all of us Missy Elliot and Timbaland fans a big ol music heart attack. This week, Ms. Missy took to Twitter to share a photo of her and music bestie Timbaland in the studio, stating, “Me & @Timbaland bk 2 the drawing board studio dirty beats.” Ahhh…be still my “Supa Dupa” Missy heart. However, this news shouldn’t come as too much a surprise, being that Missy made her grand comeback a few weeks ago stealing Katy Perry’s halftime thunder, and also the songs Ms. Elliot performed, “Work It,” “Get Ur Freak On” and “Lose Control,” have been comfortably lodged in the itunes top 100 since her now infamous Super Bowl performance. Needless to say, we knew Missy and Tim would soon be back in our lives once again…

For those who may not know, back in the late-’90 and early-00s, Missy and Tim were a  studio force to be reckoned with, churning out hit after hit and working with pretty much every music artist in the game-Ginuwine, Total, Lil’ Kim, Justin Timberlake, Beyonce and most famously, the late great Aaliyah. While Timbo has been quite busy lately spinning out cuts for FOX’s smash show Empire, it’s been 10 years since Missy’s last set, ‘The Cookbook,’ so hearing this news and seeing that delightful Twitter pic of the two of them, um, workin’ it in the studio is the stuff that music dreams are made of.

I’ve posted some of the duos most dazzling work below, so dive in and get ready, because we all know…..something’s coming. Stay tuned!
