3.Rihanna linking up with her ‘Battleship’ director Peter Berg for upcoming documentary

RiRi is about to get personal with us. In an upcoming feature doc, our girl is hooking up with her ‘Battleship’ director Peter Berg that will be an “unfiltered look into Rihanna’s life and she’s ascended to become a global icon,” according to Deadline.com. Director Berg said the upcoming project will be “much more of a character study than a music film.” Sounds to us that this could be the perfect companion to some new Rihanna tunes, which we’ve all been waiting so patiently for since her last musical outing, 2012’s ‘Unaplogetic.’

Industry forecasters say that Madge’s thirteenth album, ‘Rebel Heart’ will duke it out with the sizzling soundtrack for FOX’s smash hit show, ‘Empire,’ for the top spot on next week’s Billboard album charts. Both sets are set to sell around 125, 000 copies their first week and if Ms. Madonna does open the list in the pole position, it will mark her ninth #1 set, putting her right behind Barbara Streisand (who has 10) for most number one albums by a solo female artist.

Last night, Philly Mixtape got the chance to see the lovely Meghan Trainor perform at the TLA…and it was incredible. Ms. Trainor is certainly one music artist to love for not only for her memorable music, but for her and kind and gracious attitude that was on display throughout the whole evening. She’s a truly humble superstar in the making. You guys can check out my review right here.

Starting today, we’re going to give you more, more, more by delivering not one, but five short and sassy sonnet bulletins. Get lost in your daily dose of Mixtape music news below…

1. THIS squeaky Britney Spears “Oops” parody….

Over the weekend, music video parodist Mario Wienerroither took a fun jab at Britney Spears’ classic 2000 video for “Oops…I Did it Again” by taking out the music…and adding in squeaks from her infamous red catsuit. The hilarious video is not only worth watching, I don’t know, a million times, but it’s also fun to hear the added “oohs” and “ahhs” that Britney made so famous. Trust me, you guys will love it…

2.Carly Rae Jepsen releases Tom Hanks-licious  video for “I Really Like You”

Whether you really, really like it or not, Carly Rae Jepsen is back. Over the weekend, Ms. Carly delivered the video for her comeback single, “I Really Like You,” which features a whole lot of….Tom Hanks. In the cheeky clip, Mr. Tom takes over most of it, lip synching Carly’s catchy tune while walking around NYC’s Soho section before finally meeting up with the singer (and the Biebs, too) for a fun and corny dance routine. Cheesy? Yes…but it’s springtime…live a little!

3.Lady Gaga set to release new album….in 2016

After her show stopping ‘The Sound of Music’ tribute at the Oscars last month and recent announcement of her role in the upcoming, ‘AHS:Hotel,’ it looked as if Ms. Gaga was ready to make that music comeback that we’ve all been patiently waiting for. However…it turns out that we just have to be patient a bit longer. While she’s indeed in the studio hard at work on a new set, it looks as if it won’t be released until next year. But, that’s just yet another morsel of the Gaga comeback story, for more, you guys should check out this article from Billboard.com, which further tells the tale of Gaga’s forthcoming music reinvention. Guess we’ll just dance to Gaga’s older hits until the new set is ready…

4.’SNL’ takes on Iggy Azalea and ‘Empire’

Over the weekend, ‘SNL’ delivered a one, two music comedy punch by delivering the sketch, ‘The Iggy Azalea Show’ (played to perfection by Kate McKinnon), as well as taking on the FOX phenom, ‘Empire,’ by adding in a new “white character” named Chip, played so dutifully by host Chris Hemsworth. While I don’t want to give too much away, I will say that both are equally hilarious and added ferocious flair to what was a very hearty ‘SNL’ episode this past weekend.

5. This Whitney Houston influenced “Must-Listen-Monday” groove from singer Natalie La Rose

By now, you guys might have heard “Somebody,” the delightful debut single from Dutch singer Natalie La Rose that features parts of the dearly departed Whitney’s, “I Wanna Dance With Somebody.” If you haven’t heart this blazing banger, it’s worth a spot on your playlists. R&B crooner is also along for the lovely music ride, which is laced with a bubbling groove and fun, campy lyrics….just in time for spring.

Drake Releases Surprise Album….So, Who’s Next?

Before we dive into the impending rise of the “secret album,” I would like to tell a little music story. Picture it, Tuesday, May 16th, 2000. I was just a young-music-bitch-in training who was eagerly anticipating the release of Britney Spears’ highly anticipated second album, ‘Oops…I Did It Again.’ After what seemed like years of anticipation watching Brit Brit all over TRL and other various media outlets promoting the album (and also perfecting my “Oops” video routine), the release day was finally here! So, much like everyone else, I rushed to Best Buy, as I did pretty much every Tuesday, and snatched up my copy of the album. Oh, how I was such a happy music bitch on that coveted release day nearly fifteen years ago. Well, my elusive music kids, those high press and high profile album release dates seem like a million years ago at this point, since the rise of music artists dropping secret albums has pretty much taken over all of our lives recently….and it’s not going anywhere. In fact, this trend is only getting bigger and bigger and bigger…..

On Friday, Drake surprised everyone with the unexpected release of a new seventeen-track project called, ‘If You’re Reading This, It’s Too Late,’ becoming yet another big-named artist to drop a new set with little or no notice. Since Beyonce did it in Dec ’13 with her self-titled fifth album, this trend has certainly been on the rise with artists like J. Cole, D’Angelo and I guess we can include Madonna, all releasing new material with no warning. While some may think it’s an interesting and risky way to do things, there is no doubt that the pay off has been rich, as Drake’s record is looking to sell close to 500, 000 copies its first week out. If indeed his album does sell that much, expect this current trend of surprise superstar albums to continue on for pretty much all of music eternity.

Okay, so what I want to know is, who’s next? Since this new artistry movement has proved so successful ( ‘Beyonce’ has sold a staggering 5 million copies worldwide), I say, why not everyone do it and just do away with a release date? I mean, I have absolutely no idea on how I would handle myself if say Janet Jackson, Adele or Missy Elliot would just drop an album with no notice…a music heart attack is sure to ensue. These days, it’s no secret that record sales need a dose of music Viagra, so it certainly makes sense to keep on with this continuing trend. There have been some high profile music artists who have followed this upward music movement, so the possibility of Adele following suit doesn’t seem so far off, does it? While I do indeed miss the rush of cruising to places like Best Buy and Circuit City (R.I.P.) to pick up those albums on their release dates, the surprise album drop is not only making the fans of these artists happy, but the record label moguls as well. These days, not everyone wins in the music industry, but this new technique has proven to be a true winner for all involved, and trust me, it’s not going anywhere. With that being said, who do you think is next on the surprise album drop? Guess we’ll have to patiently wait to find out…Adele, we’re waiting.
